WASHINGTON/BEIRUT, May 16 (Reuters) - U.S special forces killed a man identified as a senior Islamic State leader during a raid into Syria, U.S. officials said, as the jihadists battled for the Iraqi city of Ramadi and ancient Palmyra in Syria.
The White House said President Barack Obama ordered the raid that killed the Islamic State figure identified as Abu Sayyaf, who helped direct the group's oil, gas and financial operations. U.S. officials said his wife was captured in the raid.
It is the first declared special forces operation by U.S. forces in Syria since their failed attempt to rescue a number of American hostages held by Islamic State last summer.

Buhari's Presidency: Banks Panic Over Single Account

A report by BusinessDay newspaper indicates that Nigerian lenders are in panic mode at the moment over the pending enforcement of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) of government by the incoming administration.

Their fear is due to the implementation of this model, with also tight monetary stance of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), would put a squeeze on the banks.

“There is the fear of liquidity squeeze due to the likelihood of unification of government accounts by the incoming Buhari administration. The fear is borne out of the fact that with the Monetary Policy Rate at 13%, Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) at 20% and 75% for private and public sector deposits respectively, its implementation would be tough for banks,” says a senior industry player.

Also, returns of lenders in Nigeria, driven substantially by net interest margins, would further be

OPINION: APC vs PDP - Why Nigeria Rooted For The Crazy Troublemaking Misfits

Richard Tayo from Makurdi, Benue State, says it is obvious why the APC emerged winners in the APC vs PDP political struggle:
Gone are the days when the acronym PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) was only so sufficient to win elections devoid of campaigns and strategies in Nigeria.
Gone are the days when it was only needed to identify with the acronym PDP to be home and dry in any election. Gone were the days when the PDP — the juggernaut, the seemingly unstoppable behemoth — ruled. The slogan of the largest political party in Africa, “Power to the people,” is the most hypocritical catchphrase I have ever heard of.
The PDP, a party concomitant with insecurity and corruption, impunity and poverty, unemployment and ineptitude, lack of power supply, poor health facilities, decayed educational system and moribund economy; the PDP, a party with the paradoxical slogan ‘Power to the people’, a self-contradictory

EXCLUSIVE: How Nigerian banks are taking your money

Francis Agadaga still remembers events of that fateful evening. He could have been a widower by now. On September 12, 2014, he rushed to an Automated Teller Machine point in his neighbourhood at Igando, a Lagos suburb, to pick some cash with which to take his ailing wife, Sandra, to the hospital. It was a tough period for the family. The N7, 850 left in his bank account would go a long way in dousing the situation if he could get access to the fund. After inserting his card into one of the ATMs and requesting to withdraw N7, 000, what followed almost left the father of two in tears.

"“It was on a Sunday afternoon and we had just returned from church when my wife started feeling feverish,” he began. “Her temperature became so high that we needed to quickly rush her to a hospital. I didn’t have any money on me at the time and so I hurried to the nearest ATM point to withdraw the little money I had in the account.

“However, to my utmost shock, I got a debit alert but did not get any money from the machine. I was

OPINION: Buhari Is Going To Hurt Us Before He Can Save Us

It is generally accepted that most Newspaper Editors know more than they let on. The ability to know what to use and what to withhold is part of your information management; it is also part of your professional and ethical responsibilities because some ‘truths’ can have unwholesome ripple effects if used in their entirety. I will give an example...

I was an Assistant Editor in Punch at the height of the apartheid struggle. Like every young man at the time, I was indignant and very impatient with the pace and nature of the international fight against apartheid. Until I had ‘an instructive conversation’ with the late Brigadier Joe Garba who was then our External Affairs Minister.

He specifically asked me to switch off the tape before he said “Do you know that there is not a single

Lagos State uses 40% of power generated nationally - VP Sambo

Speaking during the unveiling of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited Oke-Aro 330/132kV transmission substation in Lagos yesterday Friday May 15th, Vice President Namadi Sambo who was represented by the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, said The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company and Eko Electricity Distribution Company account for over 40% of power consumption in Nigeria.

He said this was understandable from the fact that Lagos, which used to be the country’s capital remained Nigeria’s commercial and industrial hub with a large concentration of industries in Lagos state and Ogun State. Oke-Aro is situated in a border line between Lagos and Ogun states.
“Prior to the advent of Oke-Aro substation, there were only three 330/132/33kV substations in Lagos. One of these three is Ikeja West 330/132/33kV substation which

INEC Chairman, Professor Jega Is Afraid!!! Here's Why...

AS he prepares to leave office next month as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, after conducting the 2015 general elections, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has expressed worry that the achievements recorded so far by the commission may not be consolidated by his successor.

Jega said INEC had done well in restructuring the electoral process in Nigeria, but noted that it would be very easy for what had been achieved to be reversed by the incoming members if the country got it wrong on the new leadership.
To this end, he has tasked Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, to play a watchdog role in the INEC with a view to putting those that would be at the helm of affairs of the commission, on their toes.

Embezzlement of N30 billion again is misunderstanding of the facts that has been
